We Have Assumed Control

Pearl Jam made a second appearance on the syndicated radio show "Rockline", this time staying in Seattle at KISW studios and tapped in via satellite to the Rockline home in Los Angeles. As if Seattle fans weren't lucky enough at this point during the early 1990s, Ed and Jeff were allowed to be "take over the radio station" for a block of time following the "Rockline" show. Pearl Jam called the shots at KISW for over an hour and a half, and they didn't even have to ask.

Evidently there was a KISW charity softball game that members of Pearl Jam participated in, and a bet was made between the band (one one team) and some DJs (and assumedly some management, on the other team), that if Pearl Jam's team won, they could take over as DJs and spin whatever records they wanted. The bet was won by the band as their team won 14-7. So, conveniently, this date was chosen and KISW's end of the bargain was held up.

Following "Rockline" on KISW that night - and after a few commercials and station IDs - Ed and Jeff are welcomed by KISW DJ Cathy Faulkner, who the band seems to have known for a long time (check out the "Gallery" at http://www.cathyfaulkner.com - pretty interesting). During this broadcast Ed mentions that he wasn't even at the softball game and is even given a free pass to take vinyl from KISW's vinyl collection, prompting the classic "you'd have no records left ... I'm bold that way". Jeff and Ed get to play some great records, they get to make fun of corporate radio, they cuss, they joke and they seem to like the idea of having control of a radio station. They've been on radio stations plenty of times, but this session - their longest known appearance on commercial radio in any interview format - is something that they seem to be "naturals" at.

This tape has apparently been known about for years but has very limited circulation. In previous reviews on this site, it was thought that the Easter Broadcast on April 3, 1994 was the first "Monkeywrench Radio". Since this predates it, it may now lay claim to that title - and all because of trying a little harder at a softball game.

Radio Show

Jeff and a speech-slurring Ed play a whole slew of songs, constantly schooling the DJ in the way radio should be - more music, less talk. Ed plays the standard Fugazi and The Frogs. Jeff plays a song by a new band called "The Counting Crows" (if they only knew). Ed also voices his displeasure for Time Magazine and Kiss and explains why he modified the lyrics to Even Flow to include menstruation references at Finsbury Park in England the previous year.
