This show was the first since Ed's illness on June 24th and Ed jokes "I drank some of the water here in Milwaukee out of the tap and I got this really awful stomach ache." Monkeywrench Radio broadcasted on 89.1 FM for both Milwaukee shows. Unfortunately only ten minutes of the post-show is known, but we're lucky to have what we have. It's "Milwaukee Night" as Ed and James spin The Frogs and interview the Neil Diamond cover act "Lightning and Thunder", who played the first day of Summerfest and were invited by the special request of the band to "do something for them". A great show tonight opening with "Oceans" and closing with "Porch". More is known about
the next night. Please feel free to email us if you have more information to share on this date.
Pre-Show BroadcastThis segment of the show was broadcasted; however, we do not have any information, audio or transcriptions to date. If you have any information or audio on this segment to share with us, please email us a info@monkeywrenchradio.org. Thank You.Mid-Show BroadcastAs far as we know, there was no aired broadcast of this segment of the show.Post-Show BroadcastEd extends Lightning and Thunder's fifteen minutes of fame just a little bit longer by bringing them on the station. The duo are nervous but very excited and exuberant, somehow thinking that maybe millions of people were listening. Lastly, Ed plays The Frogs' "Star Girl" followed by "Star Boy".

| Eddie | James is heading in here, combing his hair. How's everybody feel? | | James | A little tired. | | Me too. | | Eddie | Um, ah...Well that was a nice good night? | | James | Oh man, a little...ah | | Chewed up. | | Eddie | A little sore. I think, might. I drank some of the water here in Milwaukee out of the tap and I got this really awful stomach ache. I might not be able to play tomorrow (laughs), call the papers say.....Um okay. I'm gonna cut the bullshit. This is a pirate radio, we're broadcasting from the van....I haven't got busted yet and me and James' definition of being a pirate ... ah .... Well, we're just...ah, it's pretty exciting to be able to play music for ya. And my first choice I'm gonna throw in for you is a band from Japan. A young woman and ah this is them, they're called the "5, 6, 7, 8's". Were gonna play a couple of songs. We hope you like...turn it up. | | Song | "???" by the 5,6,7,8's | | Eddie | That was the "5,6,7,8's" (unintelligible part follows) | | James | Skip | | Eddie | We don't skip. | | James | I'm overall slave boy, music to the masses for Bad Religion. | | Eddie | And ah would that be a personal slave? | | James | Always personal. Isn't that right, Craig Hannsen, Craig Hannsen on the radio? | | Eddie | Would this be your master? | | James | This is the master of all, he was my destiny as he is today, right Greg? | | Greg | Bow down to the one you serve, your gonna get what you deserve. | | James | Farewell. | | Eddie | Alright, joining us later on this evening's set was ... ah ... a couple. They call themselves "Lightning and Thunder" they're from your home town here in Milwaukee and ah we're gonna play.... You heard em do - for you at the show - you heard 'em do a magnificent version of Neil Diamond's grunge song "Forever in Blue Jeans" and this is one of their original songs I thought you should hear. This is "The Girl in My Life". | | Song | "Girl In My Life" by Lightning & Thunder | | Lighting | Oh God, what I heard tonight was so fantastic (background). | | Eddie | And we just wanna tell you that they've joined us here in the van. Here's ah...ah... lightning, right next to me. | | Lighting | Hi ya Eddie! Hi, folks. Hello fans, how ya'll doing out there? We're excited are we not, Thunder? | | Thunder | We are not worthy. | | Eddie | So that was ah .... What are the.... When did you record that last song? | | Lighting | We recorded that last one in '92 and that ah came about because ... ah .... I stayed in the studiofor 2 months to play instruments. And ah ... having my producer playing other instruments and bringing other musicians in and ah... Joey Littlefield played the bass. | | Eddie | Is he in Milwaukee? | | Lighting | He's got Public Records here in New Berlin and he's.... He's fantastic to us... ah. He had Mark Stevens come in and do the keyboards and ah...it was amazing. | | Eddie | But it was a long process, took 2 months or something? | | Lighting | Yeah, all the work that I did on that song was like "God, this is gonna be great" and I heard it for the first time and I said "My God, Thunder, get over here and then she and I lay down all the background vocals so it sounds like a million people back there. | | Thunder | Yeah, but that's all..... | | Lighting | She and I.... 'Cause I used to be with the Esquires, so I learned how to doo-wop, you know? And I learned how to layer the voices it was amazing.(laughs) I'm just tickled. I'm tickled being here tonight, this.... | | Eddie | When did you find out that you had the opportunity to play in front of a Summerfest crowd tonight? Actually you played yesterday here and that's probably why.... That's how you got the job I think? | | Lighting | It was 12:53 this afternoon. (laughs) We got a call and the powers-that-be-Summerfest said "Lightining, you did a great job yesterday. I have news for you." And I'm like "Oh yeah, we're gonna be on the rock stage, or something, somebody cancelled". And theysaid "No. Pearl Jam would like you to do something (laughs) for them and I'm like "Okay, I better shave today!" (laughs). | | Eddie | But at the same time, you didn't really know who.... you don't know who Pearl Jam is? | | Lighting | Oh yeah, oh yeah, I knew them, I knew..... | | Eddie | Oh no you didn't. | | Lighting | I couldn't think of who I was much worse who you were. I couldn't even remember.... I couldn't remember anything about anything and I told Thunder, I said uh.... She mentioned one of our relatives and I said "Who?" I'm serious man. But when I heard the music tonight I was like "Oh, thank God man. Thank God I'm hearing this music because now I can at least know who I'm talking about. It was amazing. I'm in shock. I'm just starting to absorb where we are in the amphitheatre right now. Yesterday it was.... | | Eddie | In a dirty old van (laughs). | | Lighting | Yesterday it was hard to get a truck in to get our equipment in and today they let us pull right behind the amphitheatre and the guy in charge pulled us in and it was amazing right. | | Eddie | Yeah, "connections" (laughs). | | Lighting | You're a great guy and that's all there is to it. | | Eddie | A little later on were gonna play the ah ... another song, another original song. We'll play that in a bit. And ah that's one they just recorded and then ah...maybe tomorrow. We're gonna keep these tapes with us. I haven't heard the version of "Solitary Man" or "You Don't Bring Me Flowers", so were gonna have to check those out. | | Lighting | Yeah (laughs). | | James | Think it's Neil? | | Eddie | Well, we hope you all enjoyed that little excursion into ah ... side show experimentation at the end of the show. Ah it was ah fun for all. Hey, what's next? Is it my turn to pick? Didn't I have...? | | James | Whatever you want. | | Eddie | Talk for six. | | James | I'm talking, right now. | | James | Oh The Frogs. | | Eddie | The Frogs. Where are The Frogs? Ah, speaking of opening bands. I don't wanna get boring here - just play some more music. Ah, this songs called ‘Star Girl' and it's a new one. It'sbeautiful. | | Song | "Star Girl" by The Frogs | | Eddie | And ah - to be gender equal - we're gonna play another song which is Jimmy singing again. Your home town from your home town - the Frogs. And this is ... well that was ‘Star Girl,' thiswould be "You Could Guess It". | | Song | "Star Boy" by The Frogs | | Eddie | So, that was ah ... Jimmy from The Frogs and I'm a little beat. I ain't got the energy I had a few hours ago (laughs). So I'm gonna get James going here. I think we're gonna play some new Mudhoney off ‘My Brother the Cow' and ah.... Tune in tomorrow night and I'll drop before I...ah... | | Song | "Judgement, Rage, Retribution and Time" by Mudhoney | | comment | Tape ends here, but show probably goes on. |
