Hard To Imagine

As word of Monkeywrench Radio starts to get around, it increases the chance that people will tape it. At this show, we're lucky enough to get about forty minutes of the Pre-Show Broadcast and roughly twenty-five minutes of the Post-Show broadcast. This is the first indication that the Pre-Show Broadcasts are a great, eclectic mix of music that you don't hear on regular radio. Alternative followed by hip-hop followed by the Kodo Drummers. The Post-Show Broadcast is to date our only insight into Bad Religion's participation with Monkeywrench Radio. Of course, Bad Religion was the opening act for the first leg of the tour and these Milwaukee and Chicago shows. At some point during the drive between cities during the first leg or between Milwaukee and Chicago, it is know that Monkeywrench Radio broadcast from the van - while driving! - with some of the guys from Bad Religion. Please feel free to email us if you have more information to share on this date.

Pre-Show Broadcast

Most of what we believe is the 7/9/95 Milwaukee Pre-show session is below. It's probable that the broadcast started earlier, but this is where our tapes start. The 7/8/95 and 7/9/95 audio comes from a cassette tape that was treed on the old "Garden of Stone" mailing list. This tape contained bits and pieces of the 7/8/95 and 7/9/95 Monkeywrench Radio as well as bits and pieces of the opening acts from each night - including Eddie's cameo with The Frogs

Mid-Show Broadcast

As far as we know, there was no aired broadcast of this segment of the show.

Post-Show Broadcast

Michele hosts the post-show session along with Brian Baker from Bad Religion. We don't have much audio from the first leg of the tour but it's possible that the guys from Bad Religion manned the mic at other Monkeywrench Radio sessions. Oh, and how big is Ian McKaye's penis?

(Transcription by: Sharon Eason)

Song John Coltrane - "Unknown Song" (Jazz)
Michele Hello, Hello. This is James' radio station. (laughs) Monkeywrench Radio! And umm right now we just heard some Coltrane. Pearl Jam has left the stage. This is Michele. They haven't left the building. Dude they've left the stage. I'm not gonna go with that line that everybody knows. Alright? I'm not gonna lie. So anyways, we're gonna play a little Fugazi and then we're gonna bring up a Washington, DC guy on 101 FM. Rocket! Any suggestions? Fugazi...
Song Fugazi - "Suggestion"
Song Wesley Willis: "Rock N Roll McDonalds"
Brian "What the fuck was that?" you're thinkin' right? Uh, this is Brian Baker, I play guitar in Bad Religion. I've had a few too many and I'm at the radio station.
Michele Love that!
Brian You're enjoying Wesley Willis, uh he's a very tall fat man. He's a Chicago resident who, uh, is purportedly homeless and uh that was one of his four hundered songs he's recorded on CD. Available for your purchase at finer underground record stores. For your listening pleasure, its Monkeywrench radio 89.1. Uh we jokingly call it "K-Eddie" But in any event, uh for all of you driving home uh we're gonna have some more Fugazi. I've got, you know, kind of a D.C. thing goin' on. Uh I live there ... from there.
Michele You know Ian?
Brian Yeah. I know Ian McKaye personally. This songs called...
Michele You lie!
Brian Ian McKaye?
Michele Yeah.
Brian Yeah. I know. I know. He's great.
James Wow!
Brian Yeah and it's all true. He really is the way you think he is. Oh my word...
James I hear he has the biggest dick in the world!
Brian You heard he was the biggest dick in the world? What are you tryin' ... hey! Wait! Yo! Look I'm not gonna stand for that shit! Don't dog my boy!
James No ... I just heard he had the biggest penis in the world.
Brian Huh?
Michele It's kinda true.
Brian This information I do not have.
Michele Come on, Brian.
James Oh come on man!
Brian I'm not gonna go on record with this. I do not have ... ugh ... gosh, I do not have ... I'm turning red.
Michele Off the record, Brian. Come on. The mic's not on. The mic's not on dude.
James Yeah I turned the mic off.
Brian Oh it's not on? Yeah it's literally I'm talking here to here. Oh shit! It's on!
Michele Don't ...
Brian Anyway here's "Waiting Room" from Fugazi and I'm gonna figure out what else to play after that.
Song Fugazi - "Waiting Room"
Brian Oh Jesus Christ, um we're searchin' for other stuff to play. It's not that we're unorganized. It's just that uh it's really in the spirit of Monkeywrench Radio. Oh and what do ya know. Here happens to be he Fear album. Oh we have Fear.
Michele Yeah!
James We have the whole fuckin' thing!
Brian Oh God. We do? Do we want to do that then?
James It would be totally cool. Yeah. uh Jay did that. He said uh ...
Brian Oh Jesus.
James Ah yeah he wanted to torture the concertgoers.
Brian No mentors. No mentors.
James How about ...
Brian A lot of Sonic Youth, too. Who, uh by the way, I don't like. I do not like them. Do not like Sonic Youth. Sorry. Do not, you know .... Thurston? You know, it's like I just don't understand. It's like there's a tuner and you buy 'em and what happens is you pay like forty bucks and then all of a sudden you know everythings like smooth. Real weird. But you know, who am I to expound on that philosophy?
James Rules in punk rock dude.
Brian Oh! Oh! puh-lease! There's no rules in punk rock. That's such...
James No man! Three chords man. Three ways to do it. You do it that way or you're not fuckin' punk rock man!
Brian Yeah the day Subpop got the Warner's distribution deal was the end of it all. Uh what are we gonna play off this Fear record here boys? Uh "Fuck Christmas"?
Michele Yeah! "Fuck Christmas"!
Brian We're playing "Fuck Christmas". Kate Jackson beams. Once again, 89.1 Monkeywrench radio. You'd think we're just broadcasting out of a van in a parking lot. But uh we aren't!
James Hey now! There's no need for that man! Cut that shit out motherfucker!
Michele How 'bout Bad Religion? Play Bad Religion!
Brian Uh oh. Uh oh. Yes track 10. Track 10.
James Tomorrow I think tomorrow should be dedicated to a band...(inaudible)
Brian Tomorrow is going to be a Nicky Alexander day. We're going to enjoy some weirdos. Uh The Cramps, Killing Machine...
James Oh I'm sorry. Nicky B day. Every band he's ever been into...
Brian Featuring Tracy Guns from L.A. Guns. I'm sure you all remember them. Uh, it's not like I'm stalling for time talking while we're trying to queue up the Fear record but the thing is, this ain't major market radio. uh..
James This is Monkeywrench radio!
Brian This is Monkeywrench radio. We can do whatever the fuck we want. Including saying the word fuck. Oh I think we got it going. Fuck Christmas Fear.
Song Fear - "Fuck Christmas"
Brian Oh Jesus that was quick. Uh fuck it. Uh we're gonna hear some Fastbacks. They're from the great, great city of Seattle, which I say because I'm on tour with Pearl Jam. Uh, featuring a member of this band is the brother of a friend of mine. Umm last name's Bloch. Uh Kurt Bloch. See there ya go.
Song Fastbacks - "Waste of Time"
Brian That's The Fastbacks. Uh, once again, you're doin' with Brian Baker. (inaudible) I've got the mic. You don't. Funky D huh? Neil Young that's cool. (inaudible) Hey Kate Jackson. This is Michele.
Michele I manage Brian.
Brian She's my manager.
James Was...
Michele Definitely (inaudible)
Brian (inaudible) We're gonna play a little Neil Young.
comment Audience recording again (it's not Neil Young)
