Hard To Imagine
Ed travels in the van from Phoenix to Las Cruces making so many stops that apparently they arrived late greeted by a not-so-please production crew. MWFM broadcast before and after the show. Ed announces to the crowd that they'll be on 89.1, but the crowd doesn't react too well (Ed: "Can you guys hear me alright through these big speakers?"). As you read below, you will see that James and Ed continually refer to the fact that band members will be coming on later, but our tape ends before that ever happens.
Pre-Show BroadcastThis is one of the rare pre-shows that we have. This particular set starts with an absolutely classic soundbyte from a Circle Jerks concert that was recorded and broadcast by the Monkeywrench Radio Team. Since this show was in mid-September, it's probable that the Circle-Jerks show was broadcast some time between the Chicago show on 7/11/95 and this show. In a situation similar to Bob Dylan at the Isle of Wight (though on a much smaller scale), Keith of the Circle Jerks announces that the broadcast is "courtesy of Mr. Vedder's travelling radio station". A fan yells "Fuck Vedder!", prompting a classic comback: "Oh, fuck you, he's a cool guy". Continuing, James mans the station early and plays large blocks of songs probably from the mix tapes in their collection. This is based on other broadcasts where blocks of different songs are also played in the same order. The abrupt cut in Sonic Youth's "" probably signals the beginning of Pearl Jam's set.

Circle Jerks
Circle Jerks (Live) - "Teenage Electric"
Includes the following banter by Circle Jerks Lead Singer Keith:
"Courtesy of uh, Mr. Vedder's traveling ... (someone in the crowd yells: "Fuck Vedder", crowd laughs). Oh, fuck you, he's a cool guy. Just because you live here and you're his neighbor and you know him really well. Well hey, that's the way it goes. I only get to see the guy maybe once a year and he's always really cool to me, so hey. You know, if you don't like Pearl Jam, you don't have to listen to Pearl Jam. Nobody's fucking holding you down, nobody's tied you down, nobody's strapped you down - you can listen to whatever the fuck you want to listen to! (crowd cheers)
Pirate Radio 89.1 FM is playing this right now. Whatever I say, whatever we play ... for your parents. Are your parents at home? Do your parents know where you're at? Ok now, this is very important I need to see some hands. How many of you are going to be picked up by your parents later on after the show? C'mon. Let's see some hands. Alright ... yeah ... cool. Uh, we're waiting for uh ... the guy that plays in Bad Religion. See Bad Religion's his real job, this is just an adventure and a hobby for him. (Guitar check) It works, ok. Do the drums work? (Drum check) How about the bass? (Bass check). Ok, we got A-boy on drums, Z-boy on bass, G-boy on guitar, I'm the K-boy and we're the Circle Jerks. (Crowd cheers ... song starts). | | Song |

Mid-Show BroadcastThis the only show transcription of a Monkeywrench Radio broadcast from during the show where the show itself was not broadcast. It was originally thought that Monkeywrench Radio broadcast before a show, then shut things down, then fired the station back up after the show. The recording we have of this broadcast tells us that Monkeywrench Radio kept the broadcast going even when the band was performing, making it even more amazing that we have a recording of this. Although the broadcast isn't terribly interesting, the guys pretty thrown on some great music including full album plays of Critters Buggin' and Jah Wobble - music you don't often hear on conventional Radio. The songs played below are from readily available releases, so we will not post the mp3s. You can find these at your local Mom & Pop record store (if such shrines exist anymore).

All right, you're listening to Seaweed and uh Seaweed is another one of those ... another one of those fuckin bands from Seattle, Washington. And right before that, you heard in its entirety, um, Critters Buggin and uh that was from their album "Quest" (JR: actually, it's "Guest"). And, uh, Critters Buggin was produced by Dennis Harring and Stone Gossard along with Critters Buggin and they are on Loosegroove. So, if you're into that, definitely um check them out because you can pretty much buy them anywhere at this point. Um, they're a really fantastic act.
So I'm gonna ... I'm gonna move on again and I'm gonna play, in it's entirety - (stuff crashes) I'm droppin shit all over the fuckin place - Jah Wobble's 1994 release "Take Me To God". I'm gonna play the whole thing so just kick back and listen to it because uh I personally think this is a really fantastically produced album. Jah Wobble's done some of the best production I've heard in many, many years. And I don't know if you've heard anything that Jah Wobble has done, but it's definitely worth getting into.
This is Monkeywrench Radio 89.1 FM.or, shit, I guess tonight we're on 89.5 FM and if you hang with me later on I'm gonna have a very special guest join in. Because, see, that's really easy to do because I'm now traveling with the band and that band, um, they really dig pirate radio. So one of the people that is gonna be in that band is gonna be joining me right after their show, which - if you're in Las Cruces, New Mexico right now - you know that the only real show happening tonight is Pearl Jam. So I think one of them road bums is gonna join me later on. Um right now we're gonna get "closer to God" with Jah Wobble. | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "God In The Beginning" | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "Becoming More Like God" | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "Whisky Priests" | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "I'm An Algerian" | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "Amor" | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "Amor Dub" | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "Take Me To God" | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "The Sun Does Rise" (with Dolores O'Riordan) | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "When The Storm Comes " | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "I Love Everybody" | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "Yoga of the Nightclub" | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "I Am The Music" | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "The Bonds of Love" | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "Angels" | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "No Change is Sexy" | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "Raga" | | Song | Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart - "Forever" | | David |

You are listening to MW radio. This is uh, we're at the pearl jam show broadcasting form backstage. This is a totally illegal pirate radio station so uh Eddie Vedder will be out here on the air playing music, talking, in a little while after the show. I saw their setlist a couple of minutes ago and they have 30 songs on it tonight so its gonna be a pretty insanely long show but he'll be out here at some time to uh to do the show and do what I'm doing now.
So this is um pirate radio and we're just playing a bunch of stuff. You were just listening to Jah Wobble while we were taking a break and watching the show. Um, that's off Jah Wobble's last album it's called Jah Wobble's Invaders of the Heart "Take Me to God" so uh. That's what that was in case you cared at all. You may not, but, uh, oh well.
We got tad comin up and a bunch of more rock. If you're listening and you wanna call in and uh actually find out what we're doin, you can call us at 206-612-0625 that's our cell phone that we got in the van and you can get through to Eddie on that later on so uh, check it out. You know? Give us a call. Anyhow, so this uh Tad - a great band from Seattle. (silence and you can hear "Dissident in the background" and song starts Tad song in the wrong place). Whoops, whoops, whoops. We're gonna start that over. Here's Tad." | | Song | Tad - "Candi" | | Song |

Alright, this is Monkeywrench Radio and my batteries on my second CD player just died so I'm sitting here trying to fix it. This is uh Pearl Jam's radio station and we're broadcasting illegally from the Pearl Jam show, um, also the Ramones show, I guess. And we're just doin' a lot of music that we care about - hopefrully you will. I don't know if anyone's out there listening or not cause we didn't announce this to anyone. If you're interested in what we're doing at all, which is (a) pirate radio station, it's pretty cheap to do one of these. You basically need a Turntable, CD Player, Tape Player, an Amp and a Antenna and a Mixing Board and a Transmitter. Now, the Transmitters are real cheap. They cost uh 100 to 200 dollars and you can get them from this guy Stephen Dunifer in Berkeley. You can give him a call if want, I'll say the phone number in just a sec so get ready if you have a pen or anything. The number is 510 ... um... what is the number ... 510-464-3041 and uh, call Stephen and he will make a Transmitter for you and then you can have your own Pirate Radio Station. Do this and that way you don't have to listen to the shit music that they play on commercial radio.
(Mudhoney song comes on) So, let's see, of course sometimes you have to fuck up on it, too. If you're out there listening and you want to call in and talk to anyone in the band or anything like that, give us a call at 206-612-0625 um, (Mudhoney comes on again) it is ... that would be Mudhoney which is coming up in a second and um.... You can call that number and talk to someone in the band. Eddie will be out there doing stuff in a little while and uh, I guess we're just gonna keep playin' music. So, uh, if there's anything you wanna here as well, we've got a ton of music - a lot from the Northwest and just other shit. Feel free to call us and, uh, request something. If you're in a band locally and you have music and you want to bring it down to us, um, you can also give us a call and bring it down and we'll play it while we're on the road. We're goin' to Austin tomorrow and then to New Orleans and then we'll be back out again in November.
So, again, if you want to bring us music or just come down to see what we're doin' or talk to anyone down here, it's 206-612-0625. It's area code 206 because we're on a cell phone and that's where we live. So don't think it's a hoax.
Anyhow here we go, this is Mudhoney - great band out of the Northwest that's been around for years. Mark Arm was in a band ... the band Green River which existed before Mook ... or before Mother Love Bone, which as you know turned into Pearl Jam. So here's Mark Arm and Mudhoney. (Few seconds pause) In just a second ... Mark Arm ... Mudhoney ... here we go. (Song starts) Oh and tell your parents to fuck off! | | Song | Mudhoney - "Generation Genocide" | | Song | Mudhoney - "Let it Slide" | | Song | Mudhoney - "Good Enough" | | Song | Mudhoney - "Something So Clear" | | Song | Velocity Girl - "I Can't Stop Smiling" | | Song | Spearhead - "Piece O' Peace" | | Song | Spearhead - "Positive" | | David |
David on Spearhead
Alright, that is Spearhead and this is Monkeywrench Radio 89.3 FM. Uh, we're broadcasting from the Pearl Jam show. If you want to call in and talk to us, uh you're welcome to. And you just need to call 206-612-0625 and you can get through to us and uh ... the reason that's 206 is 'cause the cell phone's cased out of Seattle. Um, maybe you don't have to dial 206, but probably you do. Anyhow so this is Monkeywrench Radio, again that was Spearhead - one of my favorite albums of the year and a couple of tracks off that called "Piece O' Peace" and "Positive". So uh, check out that album it's a really great album I think .so um. Here's a band ... a new band out of seattle on .. .er out of Portland .. I mean on Tim Kerr records. Which is a great new label which is pretty much the best indie lable in the country right now uh, they put out the first everclear album and uh a bunch of other cool stuff so um check that out .
Anyhow, this is the Dandy Warhols (James in backgroudn: "Fuck off!") and it's a song called "Nothing To Do" . And that's James telling me to fuck off cause he doesn't like this band, but I like them. So if you don't like then, fuck off - you can always change the station. In fact, you can start your own station and you can start you row own station by calling Steven Dunifer at 510-464-3041 and uh control the media. Make your own media, that's the only way you're going to avoid the current crisis we're in - being controlled by the media. Control it yourself! Even if it's illegal. Don't let the Government stop you from doing anything, because their laws are pretty much fake and worthless and don't really matter and we just got to figure out a way around them. So do that and do a ratio station.
Anyhow, enough of that. Here is the Dandy Warhols. | | Song | Dandy Warhols - "Nothin To Do" | | Song | Dandy Warhols - "The Coffee and Tea Wrecks" | | Song | Robyn Hitchcock - "Flesh Cartoons" | | David |
David and James play nice
Hey alright. This is Monkeywrench Radio. And that was um ... my god, who was that ... that was Robyn Hitchcock, who's my favorite artist of all time other than James Van Meter (?) and Katie Heiser (?) (There are now a few people in the background and everyone laughs). I know, well ... so people are making fun of me cause I suck, but ... but don't worry about it. You can't call us right now if you've been trying to call us. You can't because the other guy that does this has been jacking off on the phone and uh, so I've been announcing the number so you can call us and the line's probably been busy the whole time.
Anyhow, that was um Robyn Hitchcock "Flesh Cartoons" and there's a bunch of them backstage always. Anyhow. I'm gonna play a new band out of Seattle, they're called the Presidents of the United States of America. They put their first album out on Pop Llama - a legendary Seattle label. And uh, they have another one coming out or it already came out on Columbia. And uh, I think they're a really funny band, they're not real serious; but god, they're goofy kids! So here they are: The Presidents of the United States of America. | | Song | The Presidents of the United States of America - "Candy" | | Song |
Unknown Punk
Unknown Band - "Unknown Song" (Punk song features the lyrics "You're a punk, and I'm telling everyone. Save your breath, there never was one. You don't know what I'm all about. Your enemies are all too familiar. They're the ones who start callin." and chorus "1-2-3-4 Who's Punk? What's the score?") | | Song | Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - "Papa Won't Leave You Henry" | | Song | Man or Astroman? - "Transmissions from Uranus" | | Song | Man or Astroman? - "Time Bomb" | | David |
Man or Astroman - plus Dave
Alright, that was Man or Astroman? and this is Monkeywrench Radio. Let's see, Pearl Jam's at the end of their set then they're gonna do an encore and then you can uh, ya know, listen to Eddie and the boys come out here and deejay and probably lots of special guests, who knows, maybe the Ramones will come here for once and do something, although I don't know if they can actually do anything. (James mumbles off mic) Yeah, I mean. Who knows man? They are serious guys.
Anyhow, this is 89.5, I believe, Monkeywrench Radio from ... broadcasting form the Pearl Jam show. You can call in and talk to us at 206-612-0625 totally at our expense and uh feel free to do that and uh Edward will be out here and you can talk to him if you want to ... if you care. Hopefully some of you out there listening don't give a fuck about talking to Eddie and actually just want to hear cool music that you probably don't get to listen to a lot in Las Cruces.
That was Man or Astroman? if you want to know. And the album ... what album was that off of? God I lost my albums! That was off of "Man or Astroman? Live - Transmissions from Uranus".That's what that was. Before that was Nick Cave ... live as well and uh, the songs was "Poppa Won't Leave You Henry". Nick Cave, also a fucking fantastic artist. Uh, that was Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds "Live Seeds.
So anyhow. Another local Northwest artist - not local here, but up in Seattle - was The Gits and their no longer around cause Mia is no longer with us. But uh, this is ... I'm gonna play a song for you - Mia acoustic - playing at the first show that Seven Year Bitch ever played at. It was a benefit for uh "Books for Prisoners" and uh Seven Year Bitch and Big Brown House which, uh, had members of ... um eh ... Funny Car which is a band that's still around and touring and also Gas Huffer played that show. They're on Epitaph Records. You probably know who they are from bands like The Offspring and Rancid are on Epitaph with Gas Huffer. Anyhow, so uh, this is Monkeywrench Radio and this is Mia Zapata live. | | Song | Mia Zapata - Unknown Song (Acoustic song performed solo features lyric "I don't need your social love") | | Song | The Gits - "Here's to all of my friends" | | Song | PJ Harvey - "To Bring You My Love" | | Song | The Doors - "Unknown Song" (Jim Morrison poetry & phone call over the song "Riders on the Storm". Is this off of "American Prayer"?) | | Song | Tiger Trap - "Supreme Nothing" | | Song | Godheadsilo - "Nutricious Treat" | | Song | Jack Acid - "Cheap Tragedies" | | Song | Tribe 8 - "Speed Fortress" | | Song | Unknown Band - "Unknown Song" (Starts for 7 seconds then stops. Sounds like Helmet) | | Song | Versus - "Another Face" | | David |

Post-Show BroadcastAt this point, our tape of the broadcast is already nearing four hours. James thinks that Ed and the gang will come on later, but unfortunately our tape ends before any hijinx in Las Cruces. This post-show session makes special note that if you ever run into a stripper in Austin, TX, named Monica, chances are she once traded in a car to buy a hang glider.

David and James Flirt
All right, this is 89.5 Monkeywrench Radio. Uh, we're broadcasting from the Pan American Center where uh Pearl Jam just played and the Ramones. And uh, that was a band called uh Tina Chopp. And uh, they used to be from Seattle and they uh don't exist at all anymore so uh (James talking on the phone in the background.) let's see, we're gonna do a phone-in interview. | | James | Who's the last person to go on tape? | | David | Tina Chopp was the last person to go on. | | James | Say something Monica. | | Monica | Ha-ha. What do you want me to say? | | James | Um, say. um. "Thank you Tina Chopp for making wonderful music". | | Monica | Thank you so much Tina Chopp for making great music for us. | | all | | | David | Hi Monica, how are you? | | Monica | Hey Dave, what's up | | David | Oh nothing, I'm just doin this little radio thing. | | Monica | Well, that's pretty cool though. | | David | So we're talking to someone in Austin, Texas. Hi! | | Monica | Hello? | | David | Hello, go ahead .... | | Monica | Oh god. You're not gonna put me on the radio are you? | | David | We are! Yeah, you ... | | Monica | For real. | | David | Yeah, totally. | | James | As we speak. | | David | You're on the little radio show. | | Monica | I'm on the little radio show, I'm so privileged! | | James | Oh, it's not real! | | all | (Laughing) | | David | It's not real, it's actually this totally illegal pirate radio... | | James | It's pirate. | | Monica | It's pirated? That's even better! | | David | Yeah! Of course. | | James | Yeah! | | Monica | (Squeal laugh) Yeah! | | all | (Laughing) | | David | Why would we do something legal? | | James | So, tell us about your new car? | | Monica | My new car? | | James | Yeah. | | David | Oh, god, I'm so embarassed. | | Monica | It's an RX-7 convertible, but I have to sell it. 'Cause I'm buying a hang-glider. | | David | Don't let us drive it. | | Monica | No, I'm not gonna let you guys borrow it. | | David | Ok (Dave and James laughing) | | Monica | I wanna keep this one. | | James | I can't wait, man. | | David | I know. | | Monica | I mean, I got the last one back. | | David | You did? | | Monica | Eventually. | | David | Good (laughing). | | Monica | It's missing a lot of parts, though. | | David | Just so you know, if anyone out there's even listening to us ... | | James | All six of our listeners are ... | | David | Last time we drove her car, someone stole it from us. | | Monica | But now I have two alarms on it. | | David | And now you have two alarms? And it's a convertible! | | Monica | Two alarms. One for friends and one for Robert. | | David | (Laughing) Killer. Are you gonna hang out with us in Austin? | | Monica | Am I gonna hang out with you? Yeah, I guess I am. | | David | (Laughing) Oh, OK. You don't HAVE to? | | Monica | Well, I have hang-gliding class that day. | | David | Oh. | | Monica | So James is trying to talk me out of it. | | James | Oh, I thought she said "home-making" class. | | David | "Home-making" class? "Home-making" or "Hang-gliding"? | | Monica | "Home-making"? Are you kidding me? I'm a stripper, why would I take a "home-making" class? | | David | Oh my god! | | Monica | (Laughing) | | David | So now everyone knows you're a stripper. | | Monica | Those of you ... | | James | She's the best. | | David | Yeah. | | Monica | Well, they don't know my name and don't you tell them. | | David | We already said Monica. | | Monica | Oh, well that's Ok. | | David | But (Laughing) ... doesn't matter. how many "Monica"s are there in Austin, Texas that are strippers and that anyone in Las Cruces would know. | | Monica | Exactly. | | David | Probably no one. | | Monica | Ton of them (sarcastic). | | David | I just talked to someone from here, they'd never been to Austin. | | Monica | Oh. | | David | They'd never even been to Texas. | | Monica | They should come down and see it. | | David | Yeah, oh well. I'm gonna give you back to James, hang on. | | Monica | Thank you. | | David | There you go. (James talks to Monica in the background) Anyhow. That was our first phone-in radio interview. if you want to phone in and talk to us, um, do at 206-612-0625. Um, here is Unwritten Law - a band out of L.A. and uh, they just toured with the Circle Jerks. Here we go. (song starts and stops). Oh my god. Ok, James, you try it. | | James | Dave, you fucked up. And I'm really sorry you fucked up. I just want everybody in the city of Las Cruces to know that Dave fucked up and uh (still on the phone with Monica) ... yeah .... yeah see, Monica just said that she's gonna tell everybpdy in Austin that Dave fucked up. So. (Dave mumbles) No, no, that's a big "twice" Dave ... as far as Monica's concerned. (uproarious laughter). | | Song |
