MWFM News Article
Monkeywrench Radio broadcasts before, during and after the show on 89.3 FM. In addition, it was planned to also broadcast from within San Jose the day before, but we can't confirm that it happened. Radio Stations, apparently pissed that they didn't get sole rights to any broadcast, pick up the signal and rebroadcast it. The kind taper who taped the pre-show, show and post-show on this day recorded six hours of material, starting from after The Fastbacks set, including Ben Harper's set, through Pearl Jam's set, and about an hour afterwards. Since the Monkeywrench Radio signal is FM and low bandwidth, this allows a DAT Taper to use the "slow speed" on their recorder and turn a 3-hour DAT into a 6-hour DAT. We know there is another source of the post-show out there, so if you have any information, please email us. Thank you.
Pre-Show BroadcastThis is one of the rare pre-shows that we have. This particular set starts with an absolutely classic soundbyte from a Circle Jerks concert that was recorded and broadcast by the Monkeywrench Radio Team. Since this show was in mid-September, it's probable that the Circle-Jerks show was broadcast some time between the Chicago show on 7/11/95 and this show. In a situation similar to Bob Dylan at the Isle of Wight (though on a much smaller scale), Keith of the Circle Jerks announces that the broadcast is "courtesy of Mr. Vedder's travelling radio station". A fan yells "Fuck Vedder!", prompting a classic comback: "Oh, fuck you, he's a cool guy". Continuing, James mans the station early and plays large blocks of songs probably from the mix tapes in their collection. This is based on other broadcasts where blocks of different songs are also played in the same order. The abrupt cut in Sonic Youth's "" probably signals the beginning of Pearl Jam's set.

Mid-Show BroadcastDuring the middle of the Sex Pistols' "Animal", the board feed cuts in and we hear the wonderful combination of the excited San Jose crowed and the lead-in music, again the Brian Eno keyboard piece which goes on for about three minutes. The show continues to be broadcast and James pops on during the encores, killing time with some Mudhoney.

| James | (During the first encore) November fourth, 1995, that was Pearl Jam. Be sure to stay with us tonight. This is 89.3 FM, Monkeywrench Radio. We're gonna have a little backstage party and everyone's invited, so stay close. Even though I don't think anybody's gonna go anywhere. | | Song | Mudhoney: "Today Is a Good Day" | | James | (over the song) Don't think for one second that this show is over. This is just filler. This is Monkeywrench radio. Stay with us because Eddie is gonna come on after the show and talk to us and give us his version of the world. | | James | (After the song ends and over the crowd cheering) Like I said, this is November Fourth, 1995, and you've been listening to Pearl Jam live. This is 89.3 FM, Monkeywrench Radio. Right before Pearl Jam, you heard Ben Harper. They played an amazing set today. Like I said, there's nobody going anywhere tonight. Right now anyway. And of course before that you heard the Fastbacks which were amazing as usual. Another Seattle band. I think what I'm going to do is just go back to a little filler stuff. | | Song | Mudhoney: "???" (Pearl Jam comes on about 30 seconds into this song, so James switches back to the show) | | comment | ("So You Want To Be A Rock-N-Roll Star" ends) | | James | (Over crowd cheering and some guitar tuning) That's right. That was Pearl Jam, November 4th, 1994. This is monkeywrench radio. (Ed on stage: We just thought of one more.) Welp! One more! |
Post-Show BroadcastThe amount of Post-Show Monkeywrench Radio that we have seems to be just a drop in the bucket to what actually transpired. Two days earlier, Ed and the Fastbacks yakked it up for over an hour and James continually says that he expects the same "later on". Unfortunatly our tapes end before that "later on" ever happens.
